SecureNet FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is SecureNet?
A. SecureNet is an additional security feature that helps reduce the risk of unauthorized access to your account(s) at The Provident Bank. It identifies you as the true "owner" of your accounts by recognizing not only your password but your computer as well.

Q. Will I still have online access to all of my accounts?
A. Yes. SecureNet will not disrupt your existing account access.

Q. What will happen to my Online Bill Payment settings or other established settings that I had within Provident Online Banking before this change?
A. Nothing. All established settings within your Provident Online Banking relationship will remain the same after this change.

Q. Why is my Online Banking experience changing?
A. With the exception of a one-time registration of your computer, your Online Banking experience at The Provident Bank is not changing. The introduction of our enhanced security program, SecureNet, will require you to register each computer that you use to conduct your online banking transactions. This registration adds an extra transparent layer of security to your online banking that identifies your password and your registered computer before granting access to your accounts at The Provident Bank. Once your computer(s) is registered, it’s Online Banking as usual.

Q. Is an email address required to register my computer in the SecureNet program to enroll?
A. An email address is not required to register your computer in the SecureNet program. However, as with your entire Online Banking relationship, a current email address is required so that we may communicate with you including but not limited to: providing temporary passcode to conduct Online Banking from an unregistered computer, providing account statements, sending regulatory disclosures and other notices, alerting you to potential fraud related to your accounts, etc. REMINDER: The Provident Bank will never ask you to provide personal information in any email that we send (such as your account number, Social Security Number or password).

Q. Is the temporary passcode provided case sensitive?
A. Yes. The temporary passcode should be copied in the same format as displayed in the accompanying email message.

Q. I registered my computer and, at a later date, tried to access Online Banking. I received a message that I needed to register my computer. Why is this happening?
A. The scenario described most likely occurred because the cookie assigned to your computer for Online Banking was deleted either accidentally or your computer may be set to automatically delete all cookies after a period of time. When this occurs you will need to re-register your computer. Removal of the auto-delete feature from your Internet settings will eliminate the need to re-register your computer each time the cookie is deleted.

Q. Do I have to register every computer I use to access Online Banking in the SecureNet program?
A. While you are not required to register every computer that you use to access Online Banking, we encourage you to register all computers that you may use on a repeat basis (excluding publicly owned computers). Registering frequently used computers will give you instant access to your Provident account(s) and provide greater security over your Online Banking relationship. Remember, the registration process is quick, easy and only requires a few clicks of your mouse.

Q. Will SecureNet protect me on sites other than Online Banking at The Provident Bank?

Q: I often use a computer at the library or a hotel while traveling to check my accounts through Online Banking. Should I register these computers so I don’t have to enter a passcode each time I logon to Online Banking?
A: We recommend that you do not register any public computer(s). A public computer can be accessed by anyone and to help prevent fraud, only a computer you own or have sole access to should be registered. If you must conduct Online Banking transactions from a public computer, we suggest that utilize the temporary passcode login option.

Q: What action should I take when I purchase a new computer?

Q: Can I access Online Banking from an unregistered computer?
A: Yes. The temporary passcode feature of SecureNet will allow you access to your account from an unregistered computer, providing we have your current email address on file.

Q: I tried to access Online Banking from a non-registered computer and received a prompt to either register the computer or request a temporary passcode. What is a temporary passcode and how is it used?
A: A temporary passcode is created by the SecureNet program to accommodate customers who do not have access to a registered computer. A temporary passcode is sent to the current email address on file for the requesting customer. The customer must retrieve the email and enter the temporary passcode to our Online Banking system exactly as it appears in the email (including upper/lower case letters and spaces). The temporary passcode expires in 60 minutes (30 minutes for Cash Management customers) from the time it was created and sent. Note: A current email address is required to ensure accurate delivery and prompt access to the temporary passcode.
